Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
