A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
